Kennebunkport Beaches

Some of the best beaches on the Maine Coast

The beautiful Maine coastline is typified at Kennebunkport.  Just 35 miinutes from Portland, Kennebunkport has grown as tourist destination and day stop over.  It is not as famous for its beaches as it should be, but visitors to these beautiful beaches, each of which has a distinct personality, rate them very highly.

There are 6 beaches at Kennebunk / Kennebunkport.  These include Mother’s Beach, Gooch’s Beach, Middle Beach, Colony Beach, Cleaves Cove Beach and Goose Rocks Beach.

Kennebunkport Beach as it is commonly known is made up of a series of beaches.  Mother’s Beach is 1.5 miles of fine sand.  It is a very popular for swimming and surfing, and of course for walking.  The north end of the beach is called Gooch’s Beach, and Middle Beach is aptly named.  Gooch’s Beach has very soft sand and a gentle surf.  Middle Beach is more rocky with sandy sections and is excellent for children to explore the tidal areas.  Lifeguards are located at both Gooch’s Beach and Mother’s Beach.

Gooch’s Beach has public washrooms but there are no commercial enterprises on the beach.  Parking is available, but a town sticker must be obtained from the police station or civic offices.

Colony Beach, adjacent to the jetty in front of the Colony Hotel, hence the name,(was also called Arundel Beach, Arundel being the original name for Kennebunk). Arundel is a small quiet beach with a very good scuba dive circuit.  In just 20 feet of water you can find excellent examples of lobster, flounder, skate, moon snails and sea ravens.  The Jetty is a very popular fishing spot and also it is a favourite area for the famous lobster industry at Kennebunkport.

Goose Rocks Beach is 3 miles long and very popular.  It is a favourite walking spot and very child friendly.  It is a wide, smooth flat beach and has excellent views of Goose Rocks (at low tide they appear as a barrier rock reef) and Timber Island, both of which are just a shot distance off the beach.  It really is one of the best East Coast examples of fine silver white sand.

Whichever beach you choose, you will find something different, but, each beach allows early morning and evening walkers with excellent views of the local summer homes strung along the shore.
